"Whatever you see, learn and experience there - it's a real gain and richness - noone can take it away from you."
You will be more empathic, grow as a person and either become a more outgoing or more introverted - anyway its a gift and a road worth taking.
Not many of you know, that it was not always just UK on my choice list for working abroad. I got an offer from the US and could have moved for 6 months across the Atlantic. I chose a manufacturing site closer to Europe instead and booked my flight early days of 2012. Even though I had support from parents and friends, even though it was for just 6 months, I still felt lonely and fearful, looking at the evening cityscape as the airplane took off. The fear of the unknown made me cry as we finally landed. First weeks and months you are on your own, fitting onto the social circles, arranging the needful, following the rules and happy to be a part of (any) group. You also act like a tourist, active most evenings and weekends, travelling and exploring the country where possible. It's only if you are staying longer, that you settle and pace down and let the vita go dolce.
Living abroad is about gradual improvement in all aspects of your life: your language, friendships, life and work circumstances. It is still about missing home and friends. Travelling there for Christmas or to follow rituals that do not exist in your new country. Advantage that noone else has: you can combine the best out of the two worlds. You will meet amazing people, use this chance to soak in new ideas, views and culture. Allow youself to try out something new, maybe finding a new hobby. I discovered photography for myself. If you can stay longer than 6 months, do. My half a year ended up being almost 5 years in the end. No need to repeat after me, up to 12 months would be enough to get to know the culture and grow "rich". Each country is different, some offer extra politeness and that British english that some of you (like me) have been dreaming of speaking. Others grow you confident by developing your strength and complimenting on your wins. Living abroad, you will find yourself immersed into so many new experiences, that are fun and broaden your horizon.
More reasons to go?
Nowadays almost 8% of the German citizens work and live abroad.
Travelling is less, living is more.
It could be your fresh start and a chance to reinvent yourself.
Don't miss the wonders of going abroad and enriching your life in so many different ways. It would be sad to have lived the life without taking the leap.
